The Alarm Clock - Scottsdale, AZ
Cue the song "Lifestyles of the Rich & the Famous" by Good Charlotte.
I can only equate my short time in Scottsdale to a small taste (emphasize on the small) of Rodeo Drive or Beverly Hills. I can't say for sure, granted I have never been to the West Coast, but the hypothetical experience that I imagine for myself was fitting to Scottsdale reality. You've got it all. The upscale guests embellish the couture stores, the elaborate resort across the street, and the pool bar where Dylan the bartender knows you prefer the Watermelon Julep with a touch of mint; and he almost always gives it to you on the house. For the coffee snob, it was a small slice of heaven - my personality exposed in a southwestern city.
Although the touch of class was compelling, there was one breakfast place that caught my eye: Breakfast Kitchen Bar. The title was so straightforward, but the oasis inside was straight out of a magazine or a Pinterest board. Overflowing with greenery, a certain personality, and superb service, it was hard not to feel like a celebrity; you were treated as if you were the only one in the room.

Now, my brother and mom who joined me may have a different view on how their experience went down. They would probably even go to the lengths to say that I was enticed by the atmosphere and art of the experience so much so that I was blind to reality. But remember, this is just a blog about the coffee snob's experience, they can write their own for you to read (Wink wink).

My family took a quick trip to Scottsdale, Arizona over the Fourth of July holiday this year. It was a blast! The warm weather, dry heat (imagine opening an oven and scalding your face), and the always-sunny-never-cloudy blue skies made the trip that much better. Oh, and the coffee :)
A hot brew is not common in the 100+ degree heat of Scottsdale. But that doesn't mean it isn't good. The Breakfast Kitchen Bar was a) air conditioned enough that a hot drink would actually be the best thing to order and b) was known for their breakfast and coffee. Obviously.
I naturally picked the drink that stood out to me the most: the Alarm Clock. The name was practically screaming off of the page! The brew was a sweet mix of chocolate, simple syrup, half & half and espresso. Definitely something to wake you up no matter the time of day. And super easy to make... maybe a blog about making it in my dorm will be in the works. I’ll let you know ;)

The drink itself was a perfect balance of chocolatey goodness and shocking espresso. The after flavor of straight beans was a kicker to anyone tasting it’s delightfulness. To the average joe, “it just tasted like coffee” (thanks brother). To the connoisseur, it gave the impression of drinking coffee without the distasteful, burnt bean. The chocolate almost became a cover when mixed with the espresso. A few hours later, you wouldn’t know what hit you (I’m talking about the caffeine rush here, folks). Towards the end of the experience, one might have their palette overwhelmed with the remaining chocolate syrup, something that could make or break the drink.
Overall, I would definitely get this drink again. But that would mean buying a plane ticket, finding a hotel, and going back to Breakfast Kitchen Bar in Scottsdale. Although, I think it might be worth it.
xoxo.
